Robin McCloskey is a San Francisco Bay Area artist working in printmaking, painting, mixed media and digital imaging.
Completing a commission to design a map of the world sparked questions about the relationship of location and history - cultural, natural, social and personal. She began work on a project to create a map for each of the fifty states in the US, beginning with the states where she has lived or spent significant time. Her prints combine photo-derived and manipulated imagery with hand coloring and monotype. Most pieces begin by researching photographs and combining images from different sources to create a digital composite. The computer montage is output as film, which is then exposed onto a photosensitive etching plate. Augmenting the photo imagery with monotype, drawing and painting helps bring a feeling of the handmade to the work. Robin has completed several commissions both public and private. She taught at Kala Art Institute for many years, and at San Francisco State University, Cabrillo College, the Academy of Art and Dominican University. Her work is included in numerous collections including the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the New York Public Library, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the Graphic Art Loan Collection at UC-Berkeley, Adobe, Inc. and the Oakland Museum of California. |
